We wanted to introduce Shaina, Paige’s charge, in a fun way. Shaina is an art student, and she has a great deal in common with Paige. She’s fun, enthusiastic, and she has
a power that will definitely come in handy.
Since a love of fine art is a central theme in this, we thought a private figure drawing class in the middle of the Manor would be a fun way to not only highlight Shaina and Paige’s art talents, but to give the story some more sibling rivalry. There’s a nod to Mairghread Scott and Mirka Andolfo’s Swords of Sorrow story in here. See if you can spot it.
Page 10
Paige’s art school crush, Gabe, is finally revealed! This is where I have to say, Maria really puts these stylish details into every character. Gillian has fabulous earrings, and Gabe’s glasses are SO COOL!

In our first issue we met poor Mr. Wiskunde, the accountant whose soul was replaced by a demon from The Underworld. As if being an accountant wasn’t bad enough, he has to deal with audits, 1099 forms, AND witch slaying! I wonder if he can get it all done by April 15th.
We’ll find out!"
The summary and Covers A,B & C were revealed last week. See them here.
CHARMED #5 (of 5)
This is the first time we see the "(of 5)" in the series which means Charmed #1-5 is a miniseries that will end with this issue. Will we see more miniseries in the future? We will have to wait and see.
Charmed #2 is out today!

Charmed #2 on Comixology.
The issue starts with a focus on the villains. Djall finds a vassal for the Demon Vephar using a newfound way of entering our world, via paintings acting as portals. It seems like the villain duo of this arc has been assembled and they have work to do!
At the Manor we get to meet Paige’s charge. And while we get to find out what her power is in an unexpected way, I think it will be very interesting to see how and in what creative ways she will use it moving forward.
I really like how the sisters’ common everyday lives and problems are not neglected. Phoebe is trying to balance her witch and advice columnist life. In the same vein Paige is trying to balance her whitelighter and witch duties and Piper’s tax problems with P3 are far from solved.
The timeline of the comic considering the timeline of the show has been a question since the first issue released but if Paige having a charge earlier than when she had one in the show helps shape her character further, I am all for it.
This is the beginning of Paige’s relationship with Piper and Phoebe and as we saw in the show during that period of their lives they are still having fights and trying to understand each other. It is nice to revisit that part of Charmed because despite their problems, the sisters have a great bond that is shown in the issue clearly.
Maria Sanapo’s art and likenesses in #2 continue to be very accurate and especially shine when there are close ups of the characters. Heartwork studios’ colors compliment Sanapo’s art with a highlight being the coloring of the powers and special effects.
Erica Schultz never wastes a panel here. Every single panel is used to the maximum. You will not see a double page spread or a single panel page and while they are nice to have, it helps not having them in the early stages of the series because it helps move the plot further. The pace of the issue is fast to the point I found myself double reading some parts because of everything that was happening in a small number of panels from Phoebe having a premonition to the girls casting spells to the Demons plotting their next move.
#2 has what a Charmed fan needs. The sisters dealing with their everyday lives, a Demon threat in the works, searching the Book of Shadows, the show’s traditional corny spells etc.
Charmed #2 is out on April 12th.
“…A THOUSAND DEATHS” PART TWO!
Djall is the hottest new art curator in San Francisco. When Phoebe gets a premonition of an attack at a gallery, the Charmed Ones learn that Djall is more than he seems. The Halliwell sisters are back in action, in the long-awaited comic series that fans of the cult TV show have been clamoring for!

INTERVIEW
--------
Kostas: Hello, Erica! Congratulations on the launch of the new Charmed comic book series. Everyone seems to like #1!
Erica: Thank you so much! I really appreciate the support from the fans. I’m very excited to the see the book in stores.
Kostas: You are writing Charmed for the first time so for readers who are now getting to know you and your writing, can you tell us about how you started writing, and more specifically writing comics, and some of the books you’ve written?
Erica: I always wrote and drew growing up, and I studied Literature in college, but I started writing comics in 2009 with my first creator-owned book, M3. Vicente Alcázar is the artist on the 12 issue series. I had read comics growing up, and loved the medium, so when I was working as an animator on the Astonishing X-Men motion comics “Gifted”, I got into the behind the scenes of making comics. I ended up taking a story that I had jotted down about an assassin named Machiavella Maria Marcona, and turned her into the comic character, M3.
Aside from M3, I’ve written Revenge for Marvel, based on the ABC TV series of the same name. I was also part of the DC Talent Development Workshop and had the opportunity to write a story starring Hawkgirl drawn by Sonny Liew. I was part of the all female writing team chosen by Gail Simone to write for Dynamite’s crossover series, Swords of Sorrow. I have stories in anthologies like Vertigo SFX #1, The 27 Club, and RISE: Comics Against Bullying, along with the upcoming anthologies #ENDTHESTIGMA: A Mental Health Anthology and This Nightmare Kills Fascists.
Kostas: How were you chosen to be the writer for the series?
Erica: I was very lucky to have had a relationship with Dynamite from my work on Swords of Sorrow. I had reached out to the editors there, always seeing if a property that would fit with me was coming to them. When Charmed became available, I was asked if that was something I’d like to write. I immediately jumped at the opportunity.
Kostas: You’ve mentioned that you are a big fan of the TV Show. What drew you in and what are some of your favorite memories watching it?
Erica: I was a fan of Charmed when it ran on TV. I’m excited that it’s on Netflix now. What I enjoyed most about the show is what I tried to get into the script; a sense of fun, adventure, action, and heart. Because the show revolves around these otherworldly characters and situations, the relationship between the sisters is so important to keep the story grounded and believable. There was humor, heartfelt moments, romance, and escapades. If I had to pick a favorite episode, I’d say Witch’s Tail where Phoebe turns into a mermaid.
Kostas: I thought the feel of the show and the already established characters’ voices sounded spot on. What did you do to prepare to write the comic?
Erica: Thanks very much! I really went for a comic that could be plucked from the show.
My only real preparation was to re-watch several episodes to make sure that I had the characterizations right. That was the fun part!
Kostas: The comic is taking place during the events of the show. Was this a decision you took or a direction CBS gave you?
Erica: Honestly, I don’t even remember what the rules were other than that I can’t use Prue Halliwell. Aside from that, I was pretty much given free reign.
Kostas: Is it hard trying to fit the events of the comic in the middle of the canon the show has set? Do you find it limiting and how do you deal with making your content and stories match what is already there?
Erica: I don’t mind trying to make the story fit because I don’t think it has to be a perfect fit. We fudged the timeline a hair between seasons 4 and 5, Paige having a charge, Phoebe at the paper, but Piper not pregnant yet. My concern wasn’t so much that it was 100% in line with specific events of the show, but that it was a fun story that people would enjoy and would look at as another adventure The Charmed Ones had.
Kostas: It is always interesting to know the process that happens “behind the pages”. What are your steps as a writer of a comic book from the initial idea to having a complete page?
Erica: Writing creator owned work is a bit different from licensed work, but my process is mostly the same. I write a paragraph or two of the whole story arc. Then I break each issue into a paragraph. Then each issue gets broken into an outline. Then each outline gets fleshed out into which page has which actions. Then each page gets fleshed out into panels and dialogue.
Kostas: Maria Sanapo’s interiors and the colors by Haerwork Studios are beautiful! How much are you “directing” the art whether that means the look of a new demon or character or location?
Erica: I’m not directing the look at all, Maria and Haertwork Studios are bring all that on their own, and they’re doing a phenomenal job! The likenesses of the actresses to the characters are wonderful, and the colors just pop, especially when Paige and Leo orb.
Kostas: Since the comic was announced and the first information about it appeared, everyone went into speculation mode especially about when it is set. With the first issue out the debate is still going. “Phoebe has her column, that means Season 4…”, “There is no mention of Cole…”, “but Paige has a charge so that means at least Season 5” etc. Do you have a definite answer on the timeline or do you want fans to discover the specifics as the issues go by?
Erica: I’ll admit that the timeline was fudged a bit. We are in season 4 with aspects of season 5. So Paige has a charge, Shaina, and Phoebe has more responsibilities at the paper, like in season 5, but Piper isn’t pregnant yet, like in season 4. We took creative liberties that we hope the fans will forgive us for.
Kostas: The interaction and bond between the sisters is always something fans can’t get enough of. And #1 surely delivers in that aspect with the scene in the kitchen, for example. How important is it for you to have such moments between the sisters?
Erica: One of the hallmarks of Charmed is the relationship between these sisters. I don’t think the series could survive any other way. The love and bond between these characters is so important, not only to the comic, but to the story. It grounds each one of these characters, and shows a human side of them. They’re flawed, but they care so much for each other. That was paramount to get into this story.
Kostas: Art and paintings are a big plot point in the story. How did you come up with the idea to use art as a way for Demons to invade the human world?
Erica: Many years ago, when I was still a young, single gal living in New York City, not unlike Phoebe, I had several friends who were artists who would show in galleries. I wouldn’t say I was “part of the scene,” but I did attend more than my fair share of showings, and I got to witness the interactions between dealers, agents, talent, and patrons. I thought I’d bring some of that experience to this story.
Kostas: What can you tease from the second issue? I hear there is a big gallery attack coming.
Erica: In issue 2 we learn more about Djall, Paige’s friend, Gabe, and we meet Paige’s charge, Shaina. The sisters get to kick some more ass, and the plot thickens!
Kostas: When Elise joined the Bay Mirror, they were still doing paste ups in the dark room but this is the era of social media. Where can people find you online?
Erica: I can be found on Twitter at @EricaSchultz42 and my website EricaSchultzWrites.com.
Kostas: Finally, is there anything you would like to add for the fans reading this?
Erica: We really appreciate the support for Charmed and hope the fans enjoy this take on the Halliwells.
Kostas: Thank you very much, Erica!
Erica: Thank you so much!

Here is what CW's president Mark Pedowitz said at the Television Critics Association’s press tour:
On if the original cast will return:
On fan reactions:
Erica Schultz shares some hints on the plot of Charmed by Dynamite Comics in a new interview by Previews:
Q: You're the first writer to take up the pen on the brand-new Charmed comic series. What are your thoughts on contributing to the show canon
and setting the tone for the Dynamite Charmed comics to come?
Erica Schultz: I'm thrilled to be a part of the Charmed canon and to contribute to its stories.
I was a big fan of the show. I hope to bring a lot of the same action, emotion, and humor that made the television series so great.
Q: What aspects of the individual Halliwell sisters do you find most fascinating to explore in your writing?
Erica: Piper took on a huge burden after Prue died, and it weighs heavily on her. Sure, she'll brush it off, but she really hurts
inside. Phoebe really grew up and started taking ownership of her life, but she still holds a lot of guilt for her party girl past. Paige... well, Paige is still growing up, and has a lot to
learn. But that gives us room to explore her as a character.
Q: For your story, you've chosen paintings as the conduit for evil. What's the appeal of using this creative media as a plot point for Paige,
Phoebe, and Piper?
Erica: Paintings are entertainment like movies or books. You can lose yourself in them. That'll be a hint to what's to
come.
Q: What would you want a hardcore Charmed fan to know about your story, and what do you think will attract the attention of curious
newcomers?
Erica: Charmed always had a lot going on in each story arc. I hope avid fans recognize familiar aspects of the show while newcomers
allow themselves to be immersed in the fantastical world of the Halliwell sisters.
Based on Erica's descriptions of the sisters it looks like the comic will take place soon after Prue died and early in Paige's Charmed "career". I'm thinking during Season 4? What do you think?

The most asked question about the new comic is finally answered by Erica Schultz on Twitter. The comic will take place during the show with Piper, Phoebe and Paige as the Charmed Ones. Prue is not in the story.
@ohchadwick ooh, this is exciting! Does this pick up after the show, tie into Zenescope's run, or take place
"during the show"?

Season-zero is reporting that the CW is developing a Charmed prequel by the team of the TV Show "Jane The Virgin" .
"Jane The Virgin" creator Jennie Snyder Urman and producer Brad Silverman are behind the project. The pilot is written by Amy Rardin & Jessica O’Toole (The Carrie Diaries) and directed by Brad Silberling (Jane The Virgin, A Series of Unfortunate Events movie) and will "follow three witches who fight evil in a small New England town during the seventies/eighties (1976)."
Another attempt at a Charmed spin-off happened 3 years ago when a reboot was in the works but it was then cancelled. Will the prequel be picked up? We will have to wait and see.

EDIT: TVLine has unofficial descriptions for the 3 witches:
"a Charmed reboot is once again in the TV cauldron, with The CW ordering a one-hour pilot script that is being billed as a prequel-ish reimagining of the beloved WB original."
"Featuring an all-new cast, the potential series revolves around three witches who are brought together to fight evil in a small New England town circa 1976."

In a shocking, unexpected turn of events, Dynamite Comics announced that they will be publishing a Charmed comic book title in 2017. And that is all we know so far. Newsarama's post mentions that Dynamite will share more details, including a creative team, later this year.
PRESS RELEASE
DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES LICENSE WITH CBS CONSUMER PRODUCTS TO REVIVE EVERGREEN TELEVISION PROPERTIES
Mighty Mouse and Charmed to Return in All-New Comic Book Series for 2017
October 4, 2016, Mt. Laurel, NJ: Dynamite Entertainment and CBS Consumer Products announced today a new license agreement for two classic properties from the rich history of television: the animated legend Mighty Mouse, and the hit 90’s series Charmed!
Mighty Mouse returns to comics for the first time in 30 years, just in time for the character’s 75th anniversary in 2017! Mighty Mouse was first conceived in 1942 as a parody of another cape and cowl hero introduced a few years earlier, and went on to star in countless animated films for the better part of the next 20 years, finding a new life on Saturday mornings in the 1960’s.
“Mighty Mouse is as much a part of American pop culture as the two characters he is inspired by,” says Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and publisher. “The original comics and animation entertained generations of fans, and with the popularity of superhero movies, there couldn’t be a better time for his return! I am thrilled that Dynamite will be able to bring this timeless hero to a whole new generation of fans.”
Charmed premiered critical acclaim and commercial success, and by the end of its eight-season run, had won numerous awards and aired in more than 20 countries. Charmed follows the Halliwell sisters: three witches, each powerful in her own right, but invincible when they come together to summon The Power of Three. Protecting innocents from the underworld’s demons, the Halliwell sisters battle evil from their family home in San Francisco.
“Charmed is a perfect fit for Dynamite for a number of reasons,” says Dynamite CEO and publisher Nick Barrucci. “We have had tremendous success with cult television properties, and the Halliwell sisters will be right at home. Our plans for these new series are sure to please comics readers and die-hard TV junkies alike!”
Details on Dynamite’s upcoming Mighty Mouse and Charmed publishing programs will be released in the coming months.
